The size of the follicle determines the size of the hair shaft, both in terms of thickness and length.  At the base of each hair is the "engine" known as the dermal papilla.  Surrounded by blood vessels which provide micronutrition and elements necessary for hair growth, the dermal papilla provides the energy for the growing hair. It is during the growth cycle that the dermal papilla is enriched with an extra-cellular matrix consisting of proteins and collagens, providing the "food" for growth.  Due to hormonal, as ,well as aging influences, the growing phase of the follicle becomes shorter and shorter, as does the resulting hair.
